This is our WHY
People often ask: why did you decide to open a gym?
Well, at the centre of it all, our vision was to create a positive environment for children, teens and adults alike to feel safe, welcome and at home. It was so important to us that everyone who walked through our doors would be treated with care and compassion. To be seen as humans, as individuals first and foremost. Our sport - their athleticism - would come second.
We believe that quality and attention to detail matter, and we hope you will see that from the moment you step through our doors. This carries through into how we teach gymnastics, and how we interact with, and mentor, our athletes and coaches. It is important that every athlete is cared for, feels safe, and has a space to be themselves while receiving high quality instruction.
On the competitive side of our sport, our athletes put in many hours a week to develop their skill. We are good at what we do but we know that winning is not the ultimate prize. Their athleticism is only temporary. What matters most is character. As coaches, we will only have these athletes in our care for a short period of their lives, and our goal is to make a lasting impact for the good. Each child who comes through our doors will learn many amazing athletic skills, some will win meets, and may even make it onto the National and International scene. But we opened YEG first and foremost so that these kids would have a safe and positive space where they can learn to be kind, to be humble, to make lasting friendships, to be honest, compassionate and hardworking, and where they can truly learn to believe in themselves. Not just as a gymnast, but as a human being. This is our goal. This is our why. This is YEG.
ABOUT
YEG Gymnastics opened in the summer of 2021, conveniently located in West Edmonton and is easily accessible from Anthony Henday Drive and the Yellowhead Freeway. We are family-owned and operated by gymnastics professionals who love Edmonton and the community. YEG Gymnastics is children and family-focused.
HISTORY
It all started 20 years ago on a road trip through the United States where 17-year-old Berrie Onishenko - YEG Owner & Co-Head Coach - wrote her first business plan for a gymnastics club. Over the next 20 years, Berrie worked with some of the top coaches and gymnastics business owners throughout Canada and has coached athletes of all levels - from Parent & Tot classes all the way to the Canadian National Team. Through this experience, Berrie has learned what it takes to become the best in the industry in both coaching and the business of gymnastics. In 2010, Berrie met Nadia Wassef (YEG Gymnastics Executive Director and Co-Head Coach) in Jasper, AB. Nadia was the Head Coach of the Jasper Gymnastics Club and Berrie was coaching at Revolution Gymnastics in Waterloo, Ontario. Berrie and Nadia eventually both ended up in Edmonton and coached together for 10 years. They share the same vision for business and for teaching quality gymnastics in a safe environment while, most importantly, making a positive impact on children’s lives.
